Even in this age of ubiquitous smart phones that are equipped with GPS, a dedicated GPS can still be very useful, especially for truckers.
As you will see later on in our short buying guide, there are still a lot of advantages that dedicated GPS have that built-in phone GPS just don’t have. But how do you find the best truck GPS?
Well, you come to our article of course. In this article, we will be reviewing a bunch of different GPS systems, all with the goal of finding the best GPS system. If you want to skip ahead, we recommend getting the Garmin dezl OTR800 GPS Truck Navigator.
A Spotlight On Some of The Best Truck GPS 2022:

Garmin dezl OTR800 GPS Truck Navigator
We wanted to start off this review list by looking at a really high-end, but also really pricey GPS system in the form of the Garmin dezl OTR800. We really can’t stress enough just how well-made this particular GPS system is; any truck driver worth their salt is sure to absolutely fall in love with this GPS if they can afford the price of entry.
So, what exactly is it that makes this GPS such a good option for truckers? Well, there are a lot of different features that we could point to, but why don’t we start with the accuracy.
It probably goes without saying that accuracy is extremely important when it comes to GPS. The OTR800 provides extremely accurate and quick routing. You can always trust that it is leading you down the fastest and most efficient route available.
It also is a wide variety of truck-friendly features. Truck drivers can input the specifications of their trucks and find routes and stops that are popular with truckers on the way to their destination. You can also program it so that it gives you suitably advanced warnings about potential hazards, speed traps, upcoming changes in traffic, and just about anything else that a trucker might want to know.
The biggest issue with the OTR800 has to do with its price. The upfront cost of this GPS system is very high. How high exactly?
Well, at the very minimum, you can expect to spend around $600 on the GPS. While some may be willing to pay that for a GPS (and trust us, that isn’t a super out there price for a high-quality GPS system), we do have to admit that swallowing such a high price is always a bit difficult.
- Lots of truck-friendly features.
- Updates quickly.
- Always picks accurate and efficient routes.
- Large display.
- Pretty high upfront price.
Rand McNally TND 740 IntelliRoute Truck GPS
The next product that we want to review on our best truck GPS article is yet another really high-quality GPS option that isn’t quite as pricey as the GPS that we just finished reviewing, which might help to make it a bit more palatable to those of you reading this review.
The specific system that we are taking a look at is the Rand McNally TND 740. This may be a name that is familiar to some of you, as Rand McNally makes a lot of GPS systems, and a lot of ones that are geared specifically towards truckers.
One of the best things about this particular GPS system is the extremely precise routing. We can say with absolute confidence that the Rand McNally will always give you the absolute most accurate and quickest routes.
With a bit of customizing and playing around with the options, you can very easily find the route that best balances time, safety, and comfort (lots of stops along the way). It also has very detailed lane guidance as well, for even more efficiency.
- Super detailed rout making.
- Helpful lane assistance.
- Good HD display.
- Monitor could afford to be a tiny bit better.
CARRVAS GPS Navigation for Truck
So far on our best truck GPS review list, we have reviewed two truck GPS systems that were a bit on the pricier side of the spectrum. However, there are some cheaper options out there that still provide relatively decent performance and we wanted to include at least one on this list.
The specific model that we are looking for is the CARRVAS GPS. This is a good option for those looking for a truck GPS that they can both rely on and that they can get on a budget.
As we said in the introduction, a big part of this particular GPS is how inexpensive it is. The other two options that we reviewed on this list had prices in the hundreds, while this option costs under $100. So, to say that you will be saving some money by going for the CARRVAS GPS would be the understatement of the century.
While it isn’t the best GPS in terms of quality, it does have a lot of good features that are impressive when you consider the low cost of the unit. For example, it has a large, easy to read monitor. It also has accurate and up to date routes. You even get free updates on a yearly basis, which is great value for such an inexpensive GPS.
There are exactly two problems with the CARRVAS GPS Navigation for Truck that we think need to be mentioned before we finish up this review. The first issue has to do with the size of this GPS. As you can probably tell for yourself, this is a very large GPS system. This size causes it to be a bit unsteady and it doesn’t sit in place quite as well as we would like.
The second, more important issue, that we want to mention is the fact that because this is a more affordable GPS option, it isn’t necessarily as good as some of the pricier GPS systems when it comes to the amount of options to play around with.
While that may not seem like a big deal at first, remember that this is a GPS for truck article, and a big part of getting a good GPS for your truck is finding one with all those extra bells and whistles. So, the fact that this GPS lacks those extra features is a bit disappointing.
- Cheapest GPS on this list.
- Great features in spite of low cost.
- Extremely large monitor that is easy to follow.
- Comes with free yearly route updates.
- Doesn’t get secured as tightly as we would want.
- Lacks all the bells and whistles of the pricier GPS systems.
Why You Need A Truck GPS
Even though basically every smartphone comes with a GPS app, dedicated truck GPS systems still have a valuable role. See, whereas regular GPS apps are very basic and are designed just to get you from point A to point B, truck GPS systems have a lot more to offer.
As you saw from our reviews, not only are they usually much larger, but they contain a lot more details that will be useful to truckers. For example, truckers need to stop somewhat often to get food and rest.
A good truck GPS will take this into account and plan a route with frequent rest stops along the way. Truckers are also often time constrained, which a truck GPS will also take into account.
So, as you can see, they are still very useful.
